When light reflects off of certain surfaces, (a lake, patch of ice, oncoming vehicles) the rays are horizontally polarized. Polarized lenses have vertically polarized filters that counter this effect to block the blinding, reflective glare that causes eye fatigue or worse problems from long-term exposure.
